Children who exhibited violent misbehavior in school were 11 times as likely not to live with their fathers and 6 times as likely to have parents who were not married. Boys from families with absent fathers and divorced parents are at higher risk for violent behavior than boys from intact families.

The Cincinnati Children's' Hospital Center studied 527 teenagers to learn what family and lifestyle characteristics were related to mental health and adjustment. Adolescents who ate dinner with their parents five times or more per week were the least likely to be on drugs, depressed, or in trouble with the law. They were more likely to be doing well in school and to be surrounded by a supportive circle of friends. By contrast, the more poorly adjusted teens ate with their parents only three or fewer evenings per week. Says Salem, Oregon psychologist Howard Baker Jr., "I have to add that the presence of a dad at the table is the greatest single catalyst to realizing all those benefits."

In a study of 75 toddlers it was found that children who were securely attached to their fathers were better problem solvers than children who were not securely attached to their fathers. Children whose fathers spent a lot of time with them and who were sensitive to their needs were found to be better adapted than their peers whose fathers were not as involved and were less sensitive.
